Detention: Community Roadshow

Part of Queer Fest 2025

Free, registration required

Join Gary Clarke Company at a free community roadshow for conversation, reflection, and a rare insight into their new show Detention, which will play on the Main Stage this September.

This roadshow at Oxford Playhouse offers an exclusive opportunity for communities to meet the company's Artistic Director Gary Clarke and to learn more about Detention, including the intricate creative processes behind making it, the motivation to create it and the people and elements involved. Gary shares rare access to his research and source material including choreographic notebooks and story boards.

Participants will be invited to take part in group conversation, the sharing of stories and personal reflections, sensitively facilitated by Gary Clarke.

Detention is the new dance theatre show from Gary Clarke Company and the sequel to multi-award winning Coal and critically acclaimed Wasteland exploring the impact of Section 28: a piece of largely hidden legislation from Thatcher’s Conservative Government in 1988, which ‘prohibited the promotion of homosexuality’, forcing people from the LGBT+ community into a place of secrecy, fear and shame at a time when the country was in industrial turmoil and the gay community was being ravaged by the onslaught of AIDS.
