I’m thrilled to be running Playhouse Playmaker from January this year, and honoured to be stepping into the distinguished shoes of John Retallack.
I did the course myself in 2015 and found it to be both hugely beneficial, and great fun. I learned an enormous amount and it was a great pleasure to spend all those Saturdays ensconced in the beautiful Playhouse with seven other writers, focusing on our craft and how best to tell the stories we wanted to work with.
For a writer at any stage in their career, there is nothing quite like having a close, supportive group of other writers around them, and monthly deadlines to compel you to produce new work.
I see my role in the process as being one to offer provocations and stimulations, and to push the writers to dig deeper into themselves and their practice: to be braver and more experimental, to play with form as well as narrative strategies, to create richer, more complex characters and write plays which really matter to them. If they matter to the writer, that emotional truth and contemporary resonance will communicate to an audience.
So I’m really looking forward to meeting all this year’s writers and seeing what dramatic journeys the year will bring!
