News Story

Following a sold-out run of Bertolt Brecht’s The Caucasian Chalk Circle last year, the Oxford Playhouse Adult Company returns to the Main Stage this summer.

Politics, past loves and revenge are vividly explored in this thrilling production of The Visit, by Friedrich Dürrenmatt. The multi-generational ensemble performs Maurice Valency’s English translation of the searing tale in an intimate studio space which places the audience at the heart of the action.

This haunting play sees an impossibly wealthy woman return to her debt-ridden hometown, offering financial support and giving its locals hope that their fortunes are about to change. But the generous sum comes with a terrible price, sparking an ultimatum which forces the town to confront its past. Salvation has never been so sinister.

With rehearsals underway, the Adult Company will perform at Oxford Playhouse on Friday 10 and Saturday 11 July. Directed by Oxford-based theatre maker, Emma Webb, she said:

“Set in a small, rundown town and ripe for today, this production weaves together sexual politics and dark humour as it moves toward a startling conclusion. Ultimately, it examines how we treat one another, expectations and consequences – a story where the moral centre is put to the greatest test.

Having weekly sessions with the Adult Company to explore the script, it’s clear that this is a wonderful group, full of talent and joy, who never fail to push their capabilities. They question and give their all. What more could I ask for?”

This Oxford Playhouse production includes a full in-house creative team, formed by Emma Webb (Director), Lucy Findlay (Assistant Director), Tom Freeman (Producer), Immy Howard (Costume & Set Designer), Will Hayman (Lighting Designer), and Augustine Van Spyk (Sound Designer).

Availability is now limited to the matinee on Saturday 11 July. Don't miss the Adult Company's second production on the Playhouse Main Stage.
