Improbable Sessions: Music to the Dance
A joyful, unique evening of dance, music and ideas
From £15*

Part of Dancin' Oxford Festival
We know we "Dance to the Music", but can we Music to the Dance? Can dance lead and music follow?
After their transcendental debut last year, Improbable Sessions return to Oxford Playhouse with incredible musicians improvising music before your very ears as guest poet Kate Wakeling brings thoughts and ideas to the stage.
Plus, to celebrate 20 years of Dancin' Oxford they will be joined by dancers Matilda Leyser and Annie Lok who will improvise movement in the moment to create a joyful one-of-a-kind evening.
The performance created a wholly unique dialogue between sound and ideas that left the audience captivated.A Young(ish) Perspective about Improbable Sessions 2025

About the Band
Crossing genres and styles, this chamber ensemble walks an improvisational line between contemporary, song, jazz, folk, experimental, and beyond. Led by master musical improviser Chris Ash (keys) with Joley Cragg (percussion), Juliet Colyer (cello) and Max Gittings (woodwind).
Their music takes them from the National Theatre to one-to-one work with patients in hospitals, to the London Jazz Festival, Shakespeare’s Globe, and around the world on tour - creating spontaneous Musical Theatre with Showstopper! The Improvised Musical, and performing with leading national classical ensembles like Bournemouth Symphony, and London Contemporary Orchestra.
