The Ashley Bale Technical Apprentice Fund
For 28 years, Ash was at the heart of Oxford Playhouse as Technical Director and Head of Production, helping shape the organisation and the countless productions that have played here.
His influence could be felt in every corner of the building, from the main stage to community projects, student work and touring productions. He was a constant, trusted presence behind the scenes — someone whose judgement, calmness and care helped make ambitious ideas possible and supported generations of theatre-makers along the way.
Ash passed away from cancer in November 2025, leaving an enormous sense of loss across the Playhouse community.
We can think of no more fitting way to honour Ash, and the passion and generosity he showed in sharing his technical knowledge with others, than by helping a young person take their first steps towards a career in the industry he cared so deeply about.
