Seemia Theatre is an award-winning international ensemble of six artists from Iran, Argentina and the UK, led by Iranian Director Sara Amini.

Seemia’s devised performances fuse European physical theatre & musicality, traditional British script-writing and Persian storytelling. The company believes in using theatre as a tool to break barriers and endeavours to bring communities together through socially engaged devised performances. From Persian, Seemia translates as ‘Casting a spell with words.’ In 2017, the six artists were mentored by Tangled Feet under its Emerging Ensemble programme, and in 2022, Seemia became one of the Barbican’s Open Lab companies.

Their productions have been toured across the UK and Internationally, including Arcola Theatre, Kampala International Theatre Festival, and Aberystwyth Arts Centre. Seemia’s plays have been featured on BBC World Service, nominated for Amnesty International’s Freedom of Expression Award, and won Summerhall’s Lustrum Award.

Their outreach ranges from community drumming workshops, panel discussions at TEDx, visiting lectures and workshops for drama schools in the UK & Iran, and are currently a Mentor for Internationales Theater Institut, Berlin.

The company’s most recent show in development started in residency as part of Barbican’s Open Lab 2022, working with Katie Mitchell. Everything That’s The Case is a bold investigation of terrorism and prejudice in a time of media manipulation. As part of their time as an Evolve company, they are excited to revisit their play that was due to premiere in 2020: The Magnificent Mind of Marcus, a dark comedy about an Argentinian family in crisis after the death of the matriarch.
