Oxford Playhouse is delighted to announce a brand-new production from University of Oxford student company Broken Wheel Productions. They will stage Frank Wildhorn and Leslie Bricusse’s Tony award-nominated musical Jekyll & Hyde based on Robert Louis Stevenson’s classic story from Wednesday 26 February to Saturday 1 March.

“All human beings are commingled out of good and evil.”

What if man’s good could be separated from the evil that corrupts him? Can we ever rise above our humanity? How far should scientific experimentation go? Against the backdrop of the hypocritical high society of Victorian London, Jekyll and Hyde tells a thrilling tale of love and repression, following the scientist Dr Jekyll as he attempts to purge the evil within. But can he fight his own nature?

Inspired by Stevenson’s gothic thriller, Jekyll and Hyde explores the inner duality of good and evil. Broken Wheel’s electrifying new adaptation of the musical promises to bring the shock and awe of the original novel to a modern audience.

Of their production, directors Tom Freeman and Jak Spencer said:

“Jekyll and Hyde is a show that has allowed us to take full advantage of the ambition and talent of our incredible student cast and crew. It demands a set which is both stark and opulent, both massive and quaint, which reflects the show’s themes of duality. Just as important is an 18-piece band to bring justice to a heart-wrenchingly powerful score, and an immensely talented cast to bring to life this timeless classic with as much tension and spectacle as it deserves.

We are incredibly lucky to have such a fantastic team to be able to meet these demands, and through their collective talent we hope to bring the scale and quality required of this epic tale of love, betrayal, and revenge. It has been our absolute pleasure to stage such an ambitious and belovedmusical!”
