News Story

Over the weekend, our Playhouse Adult Company made their first foray onto the Main Stage with a sell-out run of The Caucasian Chalk Circle by Bertolt Brecht. A huge congratulations to all our participants!

Working across the summer term, under the direction of Emma Webb with the assistance of Lucy Findlay, our company of theatre makers aged 26 and older honed their skills in voice, movement and expression to bring this vibrant production to life.

With a cast of almost twenty, the company brought Brecht's stripped-back style to the stage with clarity, verve and ensemble energy, telling the story of a servant girl who rescues an abandoned child in the final days of a continental conflict. With community at the heart of this production, there was a great deal of pride watching the ensemble cast embody Brecht's complex characters. They showcased impactful stick choreography and puppeteering, and they even had a lively jig to close the show!

With set and costume design by Immy Howard, lighting by Will Hayman, and sound by Gus Van Spyk, the Playhouse creative team transformed the Main Stage into a black box studio, inviting audiences behind the curtain.

Assistant Director of The Caucasian Chalk Circle, Lucy Findlay, reflected on the performance by saying:

"It has been a great pleasure to work with our participants over the last two terms. This Main Stage production was a joyful culmination of their achievements in rehearsals, in collaboration with Emma and the rest of the Playhouse team. The finished project brilliantly reflects their passion and teamwork, and it was an honour to see them perform in front of such a supportive, sold-out audience each night. They truly deserve this recognition."

Our Playhouse Adult Company welcomes theatre makers of all generations aged 26 and over. It provides an opportunity to explore and develop performance skills while also building confidence. The company will return in the autumn, during which they will work on a new piece before sharing it with family and friends. Recruitment for the autumn term is now sold out, but you can still find out more about the Adult Company on our website.
