University of Oxford Student Season: Michaelmas Term 2021

The Effect is a play about sex and drugs. Sort of.

The four-hander follows Tristan and Connie, two young volunteers who meet while taking part in a drug trial for a new antidepressant. The doctors overseeing the experiment, Lorna and Toby, watch on with an attentive eye as Connie and Tristan’s dopamine levels rise to unpredicted heights. But is the drug working? Or have Connie and Tristan just fallen in love?

Performed for the first time since the onset of the coronavirus pandemic, Lucy Prebble’s award-winning play takes upon a striking new resonance in this 2021 revival.
