Presented by Oxford Playhouse Adult Company

By Bertolt Brecht

Translated by Alistair Beaton

Directed by Emma Webb

Translated from the 1944 original, Alistair Beaton’s version of Bertolt Brecht’s The Caucasian Chalk Circle is a gripping tale of love, sacrifice, and the fight for justice. Set against the backdrop of war and political upheaval, this timeless masterpiece follows a servant girl who rescues an abandoned child in the final days of a continental conflict, only to face a dramatic courtroom battle over who truly deserves to be the child’s mother.

The Playhouse Adult Company, featuring community participants aged 26 and over, bring their talents to the Main Stage for the first time with this classic exploration of civil unrest, inequality, and division. Showcasing Brecht’s Epic Theatre style, this performance transforms the Playhouse stage into an intimate studio space placing the audience at the heart of the action for a fresh retelling of this classic folk tale.
