Othello is one of Shakespeare’s most startlingly contemporary plays – an electrifying thriller and masterful depiction of a life torn apart by prejudice.

Venice: a western colonial power employs the newlymarried Othello, a Muslim general, to lead their army against the impending Turkish invasion.

The difficulties of fitting into a society riven by discrimination, fear and mistrust soon take their toll on Othello. Manipulated by Iago, his life quickly unravels as he turns on everything he holds dear.

Following a critically acclaimed tour and London run, Richard Twyman’s vital production of Othello is brought to the stage by UK Theatre Award winners English Touring Theatre in a co-production with Oxford Playhouse and Shakespeare at the Tobacco Factory.

ETT and Oxford Playhouse invite you to make the Oxford Othello Project as exciting and significant as the play itself.

The Oxford Othello Project is a space for you to respond to the production and themes of the play while creating a cross-cultural and intergenerational dialogue using your chosen art form.

If you watch ETT’s production of Othello at Oxford Playhouse we would like you to share your response creatively.

You can:

  • Write a new scene using any of the characters in the play
  • Write a poem or short story
  • Create an audio recording of your scene, poem, short story or spoken word piece
  • Film a performance of your scene, reading of your poem, short story or spoken word piece
  • Create a drawing
  • Create a short graphic novel, anime or storyboard
  • Create a sculpture / piece of 3D art

If you feel inspired by another person’s piece of work we encourage you to create a dialogue with that person using your chosen form.

Your responses will be used to create a digital exhibition and some pieces will be displayed/shown in the Top Room at Oxford Playhouse on Saturday 22nd September.

Please email copies, recordings or photos to learning@oxfordplayhouse.com or post them ‘for the attention of’ Participation, Othello Project Oxford Playhouse OX1 2LW
