A Theatre Near You with Stephen Fry, Marcus Brigstocke, Rachel Parris, Lucy Porter and Friends.
A live response to theatre without live performance.
Presented by Oxford Playhouse, Jericho Comedy and Macrocosmic in aid of the Playhouse Plays On Appeal.
The Covid-19 crisis has affected every aspect of our lives, but for the thousands of artists, creatives, producers, technicians and venue staff who work in the performing arts, this closure could mark the end of their careers in the cultural sector. Theatre, comedy, music and even panto are all under threat (oh yes they are!).
Originally live streamed from Oxford Playhouse on 8 July 2020, this exciting hour is a celebration of the range and diversity of talent within the cultural sector. A Theatre Near You, introduced by Marcus Brigstocke and featuring Stephen Fry, is directed by Simon Evans (Staged, BBC1).
The line-up includes the hilarious Lucy Porter and Rachel Parris (The Mash Report, BBC2), Playhouse Panto Favourites Ricky Oakley and Paul Biggin; Natalie Paris as Jane Seymour from SIX The Musical and OP Evolve artist and Freelance Taskforce member Amantha Edmead with an extract from her award-winning solo show SOLD.
We were delighted to receive a glowing 4-star review by Dominic Cavendish in the Daily Telegraph.
Feedback from our audience was great too:
"It was absolutely brilliant from start to finish - we were laughing away in our living room and clapping all the acts! Marcus Brigstocke genius that he is proved that comedy even without an audience can work."
"Thanks very much, we enjoyed it although it really did remind us what we're missing at the theatre. Marcus was an excellent host and all the other players were great. Fingers crossed the panto actors will be in the real thing by Xmas!"
"Thank you so much for all the hard work that went into the performance. Online streaming is a great format. Hope it produced useful revenue. Hope to see you soon in 'real life'."
We’re streaming the whole show again for you to watch until the end of August 2020. The recorded stream will be available from 12pm on Wednesday 15 July below. Rather than charging a fee to watch, we’re inviting voluntary donations to go towards the Playhouse Plays On appeal. Thank you for your support!
