Hello and welcome to our bumper Autumn 2019 programme!
For theatre lovers, we bring you an exciting mix of unmissable new and classic plays alongside a healthy dose of spectacle.
New plays include Inua Ellams’ life affirming, critically acclaimed Barber Shop Chronicles (National Theatre, Fuel) directed by Olivier award winner Bijan Sheibani. We also welcome the five-star stage adaptations of both Nigel Slater’s autobiography Toast adapted by Henry Filloux-Bennett; and Alice Sebold’s world famous novel The Lovely Bones adapted by Bryony Lavery and directed by Melly Still. Both promise to be a theatrical tour-de-force.
Next year we are already looking forward to Frantic Assembly returning with a brand-new play I Think We Are Alone, written by Sally Abbot directed by Kathy Burke and Scott Graham.
If stage classics are what you're after, The Watermill Ensemble (Wipers times, Twelfth Night) are bringing us a dazzling new version of Shakespeare’s thrilling tragedy Macbeth. The National Theatre return with Stephen Daldry’s multi award winning visionary adaptation of JB Priestley’s An Inspector Calls. English Touring Theatre (A Streetcar Named Desire, Othello) also bring the first UK tour of iconic American playwright August Wilson’s beautifully delicate Two Trains Running directed by Nancy Medina.
For something truly extraordinary, we are bringing back director Emma Rice’s (Rebecca, Brief Encounter, Wise Children) new company Wise Children with their stage adaptation of Malory Towers, which we expect to be a joyful female-led explosion of theatrical glee.
For musical lovers we are excited to be bringing the sell-out small hit phenomena SIX straight from the West End, while Oxford University students will be bringing the eight-time Tony Award winning hit Broadway Musical Spring Awakening to life.
Dance enthusiasts should check out James Wilton’s The Storm which combines acrobatics, breakdancing and martial arts to form a stunning physical spectacle; and Ballet Black return with another gorgeous triple bill. Or, if contemporary circus is more your bag, then Australian company Circa’s Humans brings you 10 incredible acrobats exploring the physical limits of the body in a truly heart-stopping performance - this is unmissable international work!
For families, we bring you a half term treat with the stage adaptation Julia Donaldson’s Stick Man. It’s also never too early to start planning Christmas with our smashing Playhouse Pantomime Beauty and The Beast and a new stage version of Janet and Allan Alberg’s timeless tale The Jolly Christmas Postman in the Burton Taylor Studio.
Our intimate Burton Taylor also brings you a plethora of contemporary work to Oxford. I’m particularly excited by Louise Orwin’s Oh Yes Oh No – a brave taboo-breaking work about who ultimately gets to have a voice; Build a Rocket – a powerful and uplifting one-woman show about triumph over adversity; and Nick Field’s Unicorn Party – a political commentary on a dystopian fascist state Britain – with party hats.
If you enjoy something a little different, we are excited to be partnering with IF Oxford again for a visceral, poetic audio tour of Oxford in Only Expansion by Duncan Speakman, which explores what it means to live on a planet in environmental crisis.
There are comedians and special guests aplenty with Stewart Lee, Lesley Garrett, Jason Byrne, Pam Ayres and much more.
Looking ahead to Spring 2020 we continue our commitment to co-producing new work on the mainstage. We are pleased to be bringing the first UK stage adaption of Hans Fallada’s Alone In Berlin, directed by James Dacre in co-production with Royal and Derngate (The Remains of the Day). We are also co-producing Pride and Prejudice (Sort Of*) – an all-female hilarious new take on Jane Austen’s literary classic.
