We at Oxford Playhouse are very pleased to announce that the theatre has received confirmation of continued funding from Arts Council England for the next 4 years.
This is always a stressful day for arts organisations as they wait for news about their funding, but it is a great feeling that the Arts Council England's National Portfolio have recognised the work the Playhouse does. It's a reflection of the high quality of the Playhouse programme, its extensive work with young people and emerging artists, and the active part it plays in the life of the city.
While Arts Council England funding represents just 10% of the Playhouse's turnover*, this funding allows the theatre to keep ticket prices low, bring world class theatre to Oxford, ensure the diversity and quality of shows on stage and to invest in creative learning and education. It's the 'cushion' that lets us take the occasional artistic risk and to keep reaching out into the community.
As CEO/Director, Louise Chantal, puts it:
"Put simply, funding from the Arts Council and our other core supporters means we can be a theatre for everyone in Oxford, not just the few. After today's decision, we are now able to put into place our exciting plans for the next 4 years, which include the return of the Playhouse Plays Out Tent - which tours free family theatre to some of the most isolated areas in the county - plus more home-grown productions and long-term investment in artists from across the country."
*over 80% of our annual turnover comes from sales, meaning that our biggest funder is you, our audience.
