Firmly established as a cultural highlight of Oxford’s summer, Oxford Playhouse and the Bodleian Library are delighted to present one of Shakespeare’s finest comedies performed in the stunning outdoor setting of the Old Schools Quadrangle.

This year we welcome The Watermill Theatre’s 50th anniversary production of Twelfth Night, directed by Paul Hart (Propeller).

Set in the 1920s with Europe reeling in the wake of war, Shakespeare’s tale of mistaken identity, mischievous mishaps and misplaced love is accompanied by unforgettable jazz music inspired by the likes of Duke Ellington, Ella Fitzgerald and Louis Armstrong.

Brought to life by an ensemble of actor-musicians, this dazzling production balances comedy, romance and live music, showcasing The Watermill’s critically acclaimed bold and playful style in the glorious, historic setting of the Bodleian Quad.

  • The integrity of being true to Shakespeare’s text was successful, and yet the modern twist — and particularly the music — enabled the entertainment value that Shakespeare intended to be accessible to a 21st century audience in a truly remarkable way.
