'Bent’ broke new ground in 1979, nearly 35 years after the close of the Second World War, as one the first examinations of homosexual persecution under the Nazis. It is also a well-loved and beautifully defiant love story.
The play follows Max, a young, homosexual man, and his boyfriend Rudy as they attempt to flee Berlin. Unsuccessful, the two are thrown on a train headed for Dachau concentration camp. Max’s plan for survival is to masquerade as a Jewish prisoner, avoiding the homosexual symbol – a pink triangle. In the camp, Max meets Horst who takes pride in his own pink triangle and demonstrates to Max the dignity of being true to oneself.
