It is 250 years since the death of Handel. In the elegant surroundings of the Sheldonian Theatre, where Handel himself played, the City of Oxford Choir will perform some of Handel's finest music - large scale anthems written for the Duke of Chandos - into the context of his English contemporaries. Accompanied by Interplay, a team of specialist baroque players, this will be an evening of pomp, celebration and Georgian refinement.

The Oxford Players (Wendy Nieper, soprano – Chris Britton, flute – Kirsten Johnson, piano – Keith Fairbairn, percussion) perform music by Steve Reich, John Tavener, Thea Musgrave, Villa-Lobos, Dave Brubeck, Claude Bolling, Gareth Farr and Dan Locklair, in an entertaining mix of highly listenable composed jazz and approachable 20th century music with a strong ethnic dimension. Gareth Farr’s Kembang Suling evokes the flute-playing traditions of Bali , Japan and South India . Steve Reich’s Piece for 4 Players is performed entirely on wood-blocks in different pitches. Contrasted with Dan Locklair’s ravishing The moon commands.....’, John Tavener’s Sāmaveda, dedicated to India on the 50th anniversary of its independence, offers music of the utmost purity: Sanskritic chant echoed by a flute and accompanied by tampura drones. The timbres of voice, flutes, percussion (tuned and untuned) and piano are merged in kaleidoscopic combinations in this diverse programme.

An evening of zany humour is promised from this fantastic beefy all male Australian acapella chorale. Their repertoire ranges from a version of ‘Satisfaction’ that would delight but puzzle the ‘Rolling Stones’, to the hauntingly rich harmonies from Georgia. Also included may be their own compositions such as ‘Don’t come between a man and his Tools’ and ‘Vote the Bastards Out’.
In 2006, they stormed the Towersey Festival and the Edinburgh Fringe singing folk, beautiful Georgian harmonies, untraditional versions of pop classics, and maudlin commentaries on being a bloke.
"They are simply astounding and outstanding. I admire them immensely." Roy Bailey
“It is spooky. You're listening to what sounds like archangels singing ethereal harmonies. But it's a bunch of beefy men from the Blue Mountains, with a wise guy out the front wearing a furry deerstalker hat.…If you have preconceived ideas about choirs leave them at the tent flap. This sound is sexy, powerful, at times impossibly gentle and sad, unmistakably male.” The Courier Mail
Supported by: The Wolvercote Strollers bringing a rich mix of music from folk to popular classics. The Wolvercote Strollers are a six piece Oxford band who have played and sung together since 1996. Featuring some stunning harmonies, these accomplished musicians offer an eclectic range of contemporary music spanning folk, jazz, blues and rock.

HAYDN
Symphony No. 104 in D ‘London’
Marios Papadopoulos conductor
The final concert of the Philomusica’s Haydn celebrations combines the composer’s last great symphony the ‘London’ with works which confirm the enduring influence of the classical concepts he nurtured.
Mendelssohn’s First Piano Concerto reflects a constant awareness of his classical heritage, and Bloch’s charming miniature is a fine example of his neo-classical writing. Martinu was a self-confessed admirer of Haydn and his bustling Sinfonietta, named after its small commissioning Californian town, makes for a suitably effervescent opening.

Henry V (OUDS/Thelma Holt)
OUDS / Thelma Holt
|
Shakespeare
|
Oxford University Catholic Chaplaincy
|
Supported by the Cameron Mackintosh Foundation and Thelma Holt CBE, the OUDS International Tour presents a unique production of William Shakespeare’s Henry V. The tour culminates at the world-renowned Rustaveli National Theatre in Tbilisi, where OUDS have been granted the singular honour of launching a new season of Shakespeare’s plays in the Georgian capital.
Flanked by Shakespeare’s surrounding histories, OUDS presents a new interpretation of Henry V: spanning from the deathbed of Henry's father to the death throes of his conquests, this touring production frames Henry’s actions within a wider context of brutality and performance. With ruthlessly resourceful creativity, ten of Oxford University’s finest actors are to play over forty diverse roles. The production will be simple but essential; lamp-lit eves of battle and eerie drum cadences envelop a bare and bloody stage.
At this pivotal moment in Georgian history, the OUDS International Tour seeks to bridge cultural and linguistic barriers and to tell a story in which energy, barbarity and theatricality combine in a haunting evocation of the futility of war.
After Oxford the company will also travel to Stratford-upon-Avon then on to London to perform at Pushkin House, before transferring to the West End for a limited run at Trafalgar Studios, ending at the Rustaveli National Theatre in Tbilisi.
Prices:£12.50 (£8.50)
