The Annual Charles Simonyi Lecture
Consciousness: Confessions of Romantic Reductionist
Professor Christof Koch, Professor of Biology and Engineering at the California Institute of Technology in Southern California gives this year's Charles Simonyi Lecture, the annual lecture for the public understanding of science.
Professor Christof Koch will discuss the neurobiology of consciousness, outline the limits to our knowledge, and describe ongoing psychophysical and electrophysiological experiments that seek to discover and characterise the neuronal correlates of consciousness. For sixteen years Koch worked with Francis Crick researching this area of science. Koch will conclude by discussing a very promising theoretical approach to consciousness, grounded in circuit complexity and information theory. It opens the door to the question of machine consciousness.
