A Vote of Her Own - 100 Years of Women’s Suffrage

A Vote of Her Own - 100 Years of Women’s Suffrage

2018 marks 100 years since the Representation of the People Act 1918 – the act which allowed some women in the UK the right to vote.

To mark this centenary, Oxford Playhouse is hosting a year-long festival of events celebrating women’s voices and stories, past, present and future.

Headlining this programme is On The March presented by our 17|25 Young Company. It’s a moving and insightful look at the fights for women’s rights that have punctuated the last century.

Other highlights in the upcoming season on the main stage include:

Jenni Murray’s History of Britain in 21 Women
- co-founder of the Liberal Democrats, Baroness Shirley Williams, discussing her extraordinary life in politics
- University of Oxford students present Lucy Kirkwood’s modern-day adaptation of Ibsen’s Hedda. And Lucy Kirkwood herself will be appearing in conversation, free for Hedda ticket holders (otherwise £5).

- On 23 March, fellow and vice-principal of Brasenose College Sos Eltis will be taking us on a journey through the history of Feminism in theatre.

There is also a plethora of new exciting female voices in our BT studio, including:

- The return of Proto-type Theater with The Audit
Natalie Cutler’s Not Yet Suffragette
- Helen Seymour’s powerful To Helen Back
-
The comedy powerhouse that is Sophie Willan
- Phoenix Nights comedian Janice Connelly
- An exciting Scratch Night focused on female-led companies
Samantha Baines' amazing blend of comedy and science
Yolande Mercy's hilarious Quarter Life Crisis
Urielle Klein-Mekongo’s award-winning Fringe hit Yvette
- A poignant look at homelessness in What Goes On In Front of Closed Doors
