About Learning
Learning is an evolving vibrant – but small - department. Active participation and deeper appreciation of culture is a powerful force, enabling us to learn and understand different elements of the world around us. The aims of the Community & Education department are, therefore, simple:
- Increase access to, and deepen the appreciation for, The Oxford Playhouse’s Programme;
- Develop and enhance the participatory arts experiences available to the breadth of Oxford communities.
The Learning Department seeks to do these two things by providing opportunities for as many people to engage with Oxford Playhouse Programme in different ways: pre-show talks, post-show discussions, company workshops, audio-described performances, open-captioned performances and sign-interpreted performances all aim to contribute to a person’s appreciation of a performance. Furthermore, there are often scripts, programme notes or resource packs (often to be found online) which can supply those wishing a closer understanding with a first port of call.
Secondly, through Oxford Playhouse’s access to practitioners at the forefront of performing arts, we are seeking to create excellent experiences that will deeply involve and enthuse people with their value. To this end Education & Community marries the opportunities of the main stage with School groups from across the region, or with local practitioners, enthusiasts, professionals or the uninitiated.
To this end Oxford Playhouse also creates out-of-school opportunities for young people to engage in arts: such as our summer theatre residencies for young people, a half term workshop programme and our Youth Theatre.
